The periodical "Entomologiske Meddelelser [Entomological Communications]" has been published by "Entomologisk Forening [Entomological Society]" since 1887, and is the oldest Danish entomological journal still in existence. Since its start, the purpose of the journal was to contribute to entomology in general and to Danish entomology in particular.

The first 5 volumes appeared in the years 1887-1896 and included primarily Danish articles relevant for local entomologists. Subsequently, the journal got a larger size and gradually also achieved a more international content, including also articles in English, German, and other languages. This series of larger-sized volumes was termed "Entomologiske Meddelelser, 2. Række" and starts with a new volume 1. This new numbering of the volumes in combination with "2. Række" (= 2nd series) was in practice for some years, but was abandoned and replaced by a numbering where also the five volumes of the first series were considered.

Up to ca. 1970 the journal published an increasing number of articles with an international scope, but from volume 39 (1971) a new policy was introduced, as it was decided to concentrate on articles in Danish on items relevant for the Danish fauna. From the same year each volume represented a single year rather than two or more, as earlier.

Since its start, "Entomologiske Meddelelser" has published nearly 1600 original, scientific articles or smaller communications, nearly 500 book reviews, more than 100 biographies and obituaries over primarily Danish entomologists, and a few other communications.

In order to better utilize the very substantial amount of published information in this journal, the board of "Entomologisk Forening" found it would be of help to the scientific community to prepare an index to what is published in "Entomologiske Meddelelser" from its start up to 1999, i.e., the first 67 volumes. Earlier, Henriksen (1918, Ent. Meddr 12: 45-64) published an index to the volumes appearing in the period 1887-1917. This index is, however, rather summarily arranged, so the board decided to include also the articles from this first period.

The index contains the following sections: 1) publication dates for the various volumes and issues ("hefter"); 2) list of scientific articles and smaller communications (incl. congress reports), arranged alphabetically after author; 3) book reviews, arranged alphabetically after author of the book; 4) biographies and obituaries, arranged alphabetically after the person who is treated; 5) references to society reports; and 6) a subject index and an index based on systematic categories.

In the list of scientific articles, - in addition to author and year - are listed the full title, reference to volume number (in bold) and page numbers, and an indication on the relevant biogeographical region(s). A major part (about two thirds) of the articles have relevance only, or mainly, to the Danish fauna, whereas about 13% of the articles deal with non-Danish Palearctic items. Papers on faunas of other biogeographical regions play a minor role. About one quarter of the articles deal with more general subjects of no particular geographic scope. The following geographical categories are used:

DAN = Denmark (excl. the Faroes and Greenland)
PAL = Palearctic region
AFR = Afrotropical region
ORI = Oriental region
AUS = Australian region
NEO = Neotropical region
NEA = Nearctic region (incl. Greenland)
GEN = General

In the sections with book reviews and personalia, the name(s) of the reviewers/authors name and year of publication are given in parentheses followed by volume number (in bold) and page numbers in "Entomologiske Meddelelser".

In the subject index and in the systematic index only information on author(s) and year of publication is given; the additional information must be searched for in the main list of original articles and short communications. In the systematic list the references are arranged after orders; in the larger orders a more detailed arrangement (usually based on family names) has been made. A modern classification has been applied, although this may differ from the one used in the original papers.

A number of persons have assisted with the elaboration of this index, and this is deeply acknowledged. The following specialists have reviewed articles within their fields with regard to correct placement in families: Nils Møller Andersen (Heteroptera); Peter Neerup Buhl (Hymenoptera); Frederik Torp Petersen (Diptera); Flemming Vilhelmsen, Ole Karsholt and Niels Peder Kristensen (Lepidoptera). Leif Lyneborg has reviewed all publications and supplied the information on biogeographic regions. Ole Gudik-Sørensen has elaborated the index to book reviews. With regard to the other sections, including sorting the references relevant for Coleoptera and the overall structuring of the index, Michael Hansen has been responsible.
